Auckland is the largest urban area in New Zealand. The city is located in the north of the country and it boasts a population of 1.3 million. Auckland is treated to a warm, pleasant climate that never sees any snow. Following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, Auckland was officially colonised by Britain and the city began to grow rapidly.
Auckland spans the volcanoes of the Auckland Volcanic Field and as a result it boasts some of the worlds most beautiful and unusual scenery. Popular excursions for nature lovers include, a trip to the summit of Mount Eden, which offers stunning views of the city. Another destination often visited by tourists is One Tree Hill (also known as Maungakiekie) – an impressive volcanic cone overlooking Auckland. Hiking isn’t the only outdoor activity popular in Auckland, locals and tourists are renowned for enjoying water sports. The city is known by many as the ‘City of Sails’ and tourists are offered ample opportunity to enjoy the warm Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean.
