Mission Beach Safety Regulations

July 3rd, 2010 1:43 am

The Mission Beach area of San Diego is among the most popular beaches in San Diego, as it is a part of a larger group of beaches known as The Strand. Vacationing in this part of San Diego puts you and your friends and family in the heart of hundreds of activities, ranging from rollercoasters to beach-side relaxation spots. However, knowing the rules and regulations of the beach itself can help you and your party make the most of any leisurely visit. On the beach itself, the main lifeguard station is by Ventura Street, serving as a central hub of safety for beach-goers. During the summer, you may expect to see an increased safety presence. Additional stations are occupied during the summer months to accompany the expectations of increased traffic. If you need to find a lifeguard, they are present on the beach during the day-time only, beginning to stay at their posts at 9:00 a.m. Rip tides are a serious safety concern for San Diego beaches. Consult a lifeguard for safety tips, and be sure to swim as strongly as possible towards a lifeguard if you should find yourself caught in one.

While the beach itself is open for play and sunbathing, only certain portions of the water are for swimming and other portions are for surfing. Check with a lifeguard or nearby signs to check for the demarcations at your location. Surfing is only permissible at these specific locations. While you may enjoy swimming and surfing, the Mission Beach area is not ideal for scuba diving. Given the rough waters that make surfing so popular and the general lack of visible sea-life, scuba diving is not a major attraction for the beach.

You may want to enjoy an alcoholic beverage while on the beach, but, according to Mission Beach rules, alcohol is not permitted. The area is a popular family destination and sees heavy traffic during the summer months especially. On the other hand, the beach is surrounded by nearby stores and restaurants, and is also close to the vibrant nightlife that San Diego provides for visitors.
